Cohiba Ambar Review

June 26, 2026 Usman Dawood 2 min read

The Cohiba Ambar arrived to enormous demand on release, sold out almost immediately, and has been difficult to find ever since. It uses the Placeres vitola, measuring 5 1/4 inches with a 53 ring gauge, a size unique within the wider Habanos portfolio.

The wrapper carries a nice sheen and the classic pigtail cap seen across the Cohiba range. The format sits just above a robusto, without matching anything else in the line, and feels generous in the hand.

From the first few draws the Ambar opens with the signature Cohiba profile, with a sweet hay note running alongside a touch of grass. A heavier note appears only on the retrohale, sitting separately from the rest of the flavour and grounding everything in the way a bass line grounds a piece of music.

By the halfway point the richness builds and a savoury, almost salty note develops alongside the sweetness, adding more depth to the profile. The construction holds throughout, with an even burn, an open draw, and a pale grey ash. Into the final third the cigar gets heavier in both strength and flavour, moving from mild through medium and into something fuller, though it never turns aggressive.
